couple things to note - shortening was not vegetable shortening, as it
did not exist when this recipe was created. They actually mean lard.
Never eat vegetable shortening as it is horrible for your health. Unless
you render your own lard, or purchase
it from another country, you cannot obtain a healthy version of this in
the USA. As such, use butter or olive oil. Also, the flour used for
quick breads in this era was White Whole Wheat flour. Buttermilk is
fine to use instead of sour milk. Cream the liquids, mix the dry ingredients, then add dry mixture to the wet mixture. Baking time is actually closer to 40 minutes - use toothpick test. To see original book, click here.
